Look up a word

Open Dictionary, choose Latin to English or English to Latin, enter a word, and press the arrow. Verbum keeps alternate definitions and grammatical analyses separate when a word has more than one possible reading.

Can Verbum parse a sentence?

Yes. Enter two or more Latin words and choose Parse Sentence. Sentence parsing is separate from Passage Scan and remains free.

Scan a printed passage

Open Scan, choose Latin-to-English or English-to-Latin, then photograph printed text or choose an image from Photos. Recognition happens on your device with Apple Vision.

Adjust the crop around the source passage, choose Use passage, then read the photographed text in the Latin or English source tab. Tap any word for its dictionary result, morphology when available, alternatives, correction action, and full dictionary entry.

For Latin scans, Interlinear places a short English dictionary gloss beneath each word. For English scans, it places a selected Latin lemma beneath each English word. Interlinear is a literal study aid, not a polished sentence translation. The Words tab presents the same analysis as a compact list.

To correct recognition, tap a word and choose Edit. To edit the whole passage or change its line breaks, choose Edit in the passage header.

Does Verbum upload my photos?

No. Passage photographs, word positions, line positions, and crop geometry remain on your device. When you choose Use passage, normalized source words in the selected crop are sent in batches to the matching dictionary service. Interlinear reuses those results.

Why are some words missed?

Passage Scan works best with clearly printed Latin or English. Handwriting, decorative type, blur, glare, page curvature, low light, and steep camera angles can reduce accuracy. Retake the photo in even light, adjust the crop, or use the word sheet’s Edit action.

Verbum Pro

Every installation includes three successful Passage Scans. A scan is counted only after Verbum recognizes at least one word. Free users can also open one complete Interlinear passage preview; it is consumed only after Interlinear opens and at least one valid gloss loads.

Verbum Pro is a one-time, non-consumable purchase that unlocks unlimited Passage Scans and Interlinear reading for every scanned passage. Dictionary lookup, charts, sentence parsing, flashcards, and the source and Words passage tabs remain available without Pro.

Restore a purchase

Open Settings, select Verbum Pro, then choose Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple Account that originally purchased Verbum Pro. StoreKit purchase history determines access, including eligible Family Sharing purchases.

Apple handles payment and refunds. For a refund request, visit reportaproblem.apple.com.

Troubleshooting

• If a lookup times out, check your connection and try again.
• If scanning fails, allow Camera or Photos access in iOS Settings, then retake the image.
• If passage analysis fails, keep the passage open and use the inline Retry action.
• If a recognized word is incorrect, use the word sheet’s Edit action instead of rescanning.
• If Verbum Pro does not appear, use Restore Purchases while signed into the purchasing Apple Account.
• If saved cards appear incorrect, contact support before clearing them.

What to include in a report

Send the Verbum version, iOS version, what you expected, and what happened. Never include private documents, passage photos containing personal information, passwords, or payment-card details.
